Horton Township was surveyed as a Township in 1825. During that time period, the Province of Ontario built a Government Road to open up the interior of what has now become Renfrew County. This road, called the Opeongo Road, started at Farrell's Landing on the Ottawa River in Horton. Our municipality was incorporated in 1850. At that time Horton Township included the Village of Renfrew, which separated and formed its own municipality in 1858. Today approximately 3,000 people reside in Horton Township. The Township stretches along the Ottawa River and is bordered by its other boundaries of McNab-Braeside, Renfrew, Admaston/Bromley and Whitewater Region. Horton Township is extremely proud of our Recreational facilities. These include a modern community centre and a covered outdoor regulation-size rink with a change-room facility. These recreational assets are worth over $1 million. The ever-growing commercial and industrial sector is comprised of 4 tourist and camping facilities and several light industrial manufacturing businesses. Recently, RONA Building Centre and George Jackson Toyota have moved to the Township. Other noteable businesses are Storyland Theme Park, and Valley Heritage Radio Station. We are also honoured to have four churches practicing in our Township. The Township is very proud that the Renfrew Golf Club, which first received its charter in 1929, is located and operating within Horton Township. Our rural community is fortunate to have many active volunteers that participate on various Township Committees. Many social and fundraising Community events are held throughout the year with the help of these volunteers. These include Euchre, a winter carnival, a Canada Day Breakfast, and spaghetti suppers to name a few. Horton Township's diverse mixture of farm, residential, commercial, industrial and recreational properties makes our municipality a unique and attractive place to live and do business.
